What are ALPR?
ALPR are cameras that photograph a vehicle’s license plate and convert it into readable text, recording the plate number along with the date, time, and location of the read.
How is the data collected from ALPR being used?
University Parking and Transportation have used ALPR for several years to support parking operations and public safety functions. Plate reads support permit verification and parking enforcement, and are used by Public Safety in specific situations such as locating a missing person, investigating a crime, or identifying a stolen vehicle.
How long is ALPR data stored, and where?
License plate data is purged after 30 days. Records connected to an active investigation, or that we’re legally required to preserve, may be kept longer. All ALPR data resides on University-managed, secure servers.
Who has access to this data, and under what circumstances?
Access is restricted to authorized personnel within the Department of Public Safety and is limited to the purposes described above.
Is this data shared outside the University?
Plate read data is not shared publicly or with commercial entities. It is not shared with any other agency on an automated or continuous basis. It may be shared with law enforcement agencies on a case-by-case basis in support of a specific investigation, in response to a subpoena, court order, or other valid legal process, or where there is an immediate threat to life or safety. Requests for data from outside agencies are reviewed by the University before any information is released.
