Safety training for laboratory personnel

Access to mandatory annual training for laboratory personnel. Includes training records and transcripts, executive summaries, and the compliance checklist form. Lab safety training is required annually, as is site-specific training based on the hazards employees work with. Training is available in MyPath.

All lab personnel are required to complete annual safety training and site-specific training to properly work with environmental hazards. This includes employees, students, visitors, and visiting scientists. Training is available in MyPath.

In addition, a “Hazard Assessment Tool” is available in MyPath to help you determine the appropriate safety training required for you based on the hazardous materials, processes and equipment that are present in your workplace. Search for “Hazard Assessment Tool” in MyPath.

Research laboratories training

Please choose the course that most accurately describes the materials that you handle within your duties. If you are unsure of the course to take, please ask your Principal Investigator or Supervisor.

All courses contain content on chemical safety, lab equipment safety, disposal of waste, emergency response, and human ‘bloodborne pathogens’ (human blood, body fluids, tissues or cells/cell lines).  They also explain how to evaluate hazards, minimize the potential for injury or exposure, and the workplace controls and practices staff should follow when working in UR laboratories.  All courses include Bloodborne Pathogens training.

EHS Laboratory Safety Training

Standard Chemical

This training is designed for laboratory locations where chemicals and human specimens/cells/cell lines are used.

 

Who should take this training?

  • Clinical Labs
  • Phlebotomists
  • Venous Nurses
  • Study Coordinators

If your lab works with infectious agents (other than human specimens) or recombinant or synthetic nucleic acids, you must also take the Biohazards and Biosafety module.  If your lab works with animals, you must also take the Animals module.

EHS Laboratory Safety Training

Chemical and Biological

This training is designed for locations where chemicals, infectious agents and/or recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules are used. In addition to standard content, it contains content on Biosafety Level 2, and the NIH Guidelines.

 

Who should take this training?

  • Clinical Microbiology Staff
  • Principal Investigators

If your lab works with animals, you must also take the Animals module.

EHS Laboratory Safety Training

Chemical and Animal

This training is designed for locations where chemicals, human specimens/cells/cell lines and animals are used. In addition to standard content, this course contains content on animal safety.

If your lab works with infectious agents (other than human specimens) or recombinant or synthetic nucleic acids, you must also take the Biohazards and Biosafety module.

Instructions for self-enrolling

  • Once logged in to MyPath successfully, click on the “Search for Training” button.
  • Enter “EHS Laboratory Safety Training” into the search box and search.
  • Click on the relevant training for your position and the most recent year.
  • Click the blue “Request” button on the right to enroll/add to your Learning Transcript.
  • To start the course, click the blue “Open Curriculum” button. Then click the first listed section, and then click “Launch” to start the first Module.
    • Modules must be completed in order, and you must pass the first module to advance. A checkmark will appear on the top-left corner of the lesson icon when the lesson has been completed.
  • At the end, download and/or review each document. To mark documents as complete, click the drop-down button to Launch, view (+/- Save or Print) the document displayed and click “Mark Complete” to attest you have read the material.
    • Only the course screen below will give you credit for the course in MyPath. The training will show “In Progress” until the last “Mark Complete” has been selected

Training that you have requested will remain available in your Learning Transcript.

Accessing your transcript in MyPath

  • Hover cursor over the “My Learning” tab (blue bars at top of screen), then select “My Learning Transcript”.
  • Switch the Training Status button (white button mid-screen) from “Active” to “Completed”.
  • For the appropriate course, click the blue options arrow and select “View Training Details”.
  • Expand the “Transcript History” heading (usually the last heading) by clicking the white down arrow on the far right.
  • Print this page for your records.

Laboratory compliance checklist

This site specific checklist is required to be completed ANNUALLY by all staff, including the Principal Investigator.

Completing the checklist helps ensure that all staff are aware of the hazards present in their lab and have been trained to handle those hazards safely. Checklists should be maintained by the Principal Investigator or Lab Manager for five years.
