Policy documentation that includes: assisting supervisors in identification of work activities, locations and work tasks that put employees at risk for heat illness; maintaining and making available heat stress training (EHS Temperature Extremes Cold & Heat – available in MyPath); at the request of supervisors, assisting in identifying employees at risk of heat illness, as well as control strategies, work practices and personal protective equipment to mitigate risk.

This policy establishes a system of controls within the University of Rochester that allow work involving possible sources of ignition to be carried out safely in accordance with NYS Fire Code Chapter 35, OSHA laws, and good practices. This policy requires all employees and contractors to obtain a hot work permit before performing work which includes, but is not limited to, welding, brazing, soldering, torch cutting, chipping, grinding and any other task that generates sparks or heat.

The University recognizes the impact that indoor air quality may have in the workplace. In an effort to provide the University Community with acceptable indoor air quality, Environmental Health and Safety has developed an Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Program to establish procedures for evaluating IAQ and provide information to the University Community.

On July 8, 2024, the EPA issued a new federal standard regarding Methylene Chloride (Dichloromethane; CAS# 75-09-2) under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Access the latest University procedures with links to the current EPA standard.

This policy emphasizes management of water-damaged and/or mold-contaminated building materials through proper assessment, development of a work plan, and proper execution of remedial activities before microbial content becomes problematic. Procedures for water-impacted building materials and mold cleanup are based on exposure control objectives, the extent of contamination, site-conditions, and the sensitivity of the area.
